WE WELCOME YOUR PROPOSALS! Mess Hall is a 700 sq. ft. storefront with capacity for about 50 in the heart of Rogers Park, Chicago. We’ve hosted art exhibits, worm composting, tofu making, seed exchanging and skill sharing workshops of all types. Our space is kinda small and not ideal for bands or live performances. But, hey, you’re a creative person, so maybe you have a fantastic idea and we can make it work, so think, plan, explain, propose… We review proposals once a month, so it may take us anywhere from 1-3 weeks to get back to you. Mess Hall is a commerce-free site. No money is exchanged here. No sales, passing of the hat or fund-raisers. Wondering why? Check out the “Mess Hall Texts” link on the right or the FAQ page on this blog.

SUNDAY, JULY 4th —Sunday Skillshare Series: Screen Printing
10am – 12pm

Come pull some screens with CAFF! We’ll have two screen-printing boards going
from 10:00-noon & several different designs. Print on paper or on clothes from
the free box. Stop in for a minute or join us for the duration. Coffee for all.

(Caff Composts)

MONDAY JULY 5–Supralingual/Sublingual: The Tongue is the Terrain by Gary Setzer
9pm – 10pm

Supralingual/Sublingual: The Tongue is the Terrain, is a new performance by
visual artist, Gary Setzer. Integrating video, live music, and performance art,
Setzer metaphorically parallels the division between air and land with the
division between language and its meaning. The surface of the landscape is the
literal seam between the atmosphere and geosphere; as such, it becomes host to
a range of metaphoric activity revealing both the poetry and gracelessness of
straddling the language/meaning divide. Setzer posits himself here, merging
electro nu-wave music and process-oriented performance art to deliver a nerdy
audiovisual spectacle that recalls Joseph Beuys or Bruce Nauman as much as it
does Devo.

TUESDAY, JUNE 29, 6:30pm – 9:00pm: Report Back & Slideshow on Haiti (with Ivy Jeanne)

Come out to see a REPORT BACK & SLIDESHOW by Ivy Jeanne about her recent 2-month trip to Haiti post-earthquake. ****snacks @ 6:30****slideshow @ 7:00***

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30, 7:00-9:00pm: The Caldwells & Fishermans perform at Mess Hall (Live Music!)

“After departing for their respected schools nationwide, The Caldwells and Fishermans return to shore with a special midsummer performance at the unique community center, Mess Hall. The Caldwells are a gang of four who send out good vibrations with their 60′s pop and garage rock sound. Perfect companions, Fishermans provide an enchanted journey with their diverse instrumentation including trumpets and electronic samples that give way to heart-filled group sing-a-longs. Both groups are looking forward to sharing new material, baked goods and some good ol’ fashioned fun.

The show starts at 7pm and is free to the open public!

Fishermans – www.myspace.com/fishermansUSA
The Caldwells – www.myspace.com/thecaldwellsband

THURSDAY, JULY 1, 7:00-9:00pm: Writing at the Movies

“Writing at the Movies” A new writing workshop led by the poet Gene Tanta. Participants in this workshop will use as our point of departure Andre Breton’s surrealist montage technique of dropping in and out of various cinemas looking to cutup visual elements and dialogues. However, instead of the velvety cinemas of Paris, we will use DVDs and Google Videos (no limits on
theme or form). For the first half, we will screen a few minutes of the films we bring in and/or of internet audio-visual artifacts while describing what we see and hear. For the second half, we will perform and discuss what we produced (again, no limits on theme or form). We will write in response to these moving images and sounds, striving for a precise or even a phenomenological
(suspending our assumptions) description of what we see and hear.

Free & open to the general public! Everyone is welcome to attend!

ONGOING EXHIBITION From the Mess Hall Library & Archive

LOOK WHAT’S COMING TO YOU HERE THIS SUNDAY + MONDAY

JOIN TAMMS YEAR TEN: POTLUCK + PRISONER LETTERS
SUNDAY JUNE 27, 5PM @ MESS HALL

WHAT: Tamms Year Ten is holding monthly potluck meetings to read, discuss, and answer letters from men held in permanent solitary confinement at Tamms supermax prison. We will read and answer letters sent to us by prisoners at Tamms. Bring snacks, a dish or beverages if you can, but come even if you can’t!

WHY: Many of the prisoners at Tamms have been kept in total social isolation since the prison opened in 1998. Tamms Year Ten’s public letter writing campaign initiates basic human contact with the prisoners at Tamms, and raises awareness about the warehousing of prisoners in long-term solitary confinement.

WHEN: Sunday, June 27th at 5pm

WHERE: Mess Hall, 6932 North Glenwood Avenue

Come learn more about conditions at Tamms and what you can do to help. For more information visit www.yearten.org.

ReMake Estate Artist Talk: You Are Here (Keg de Souza and Zanny Begg) with Sam A Love
Monday June 28th, 7pm

ReMake Estate is an art project initiated by two Sydney based artists Keg de Souza and Zanny Begg (You Are Here) that will transform an abandoned house and lot in Gary on the southwest corner of the intersection of 24th Avenue and Massachusetts Street (just down the road from Central District Organising Project) into a community meeting space and garden. The project is being organised in conjunction with interested local community groups and individuals and we invite you to join! (http://youareherenews.wordpress.com/)

You Are Here are in Gary for six weeks over summer – the local groups and individuals who get involved will be stakeholders of ReMake Estate into the future.

Major Rudy Clay, in his attempt to build a Michael Jackson Memorial in Gary has said that the only thing that will ruin it is the people of Gary “poisoning the soup”. ReMake Estate is a celebration of the people of Gary, including its most famous son Michael Jackson, showing that the soup is indeed a healthy brew.

You Are Here was founded in 2008 to bring together the various collaborative projects of Keg de Souza and Zanny Begg. In the same year Temporary Services came to Sydney for an exhibition that focused on urban change in the suburb of Redfern, Sydney, called There Goes The Neighbourhood – their trip inspired You Are Here to venture to Chicago. Come along to an artist talk about You Are Here and the ReMake Estate project in Gary. For more information www.youarehere.me.

THURSDAY, JUNE 10–Next Objectivists (on: Situationist International!)
7pm – 10pm

The Next Objectivists meet this Thursday in order to imagine a SITUATIONIST
INTERNATIONAL poetics. From the late 1950s through the early 1970s, the SI
practiced and theorized the use of art to politicize everyday life in the face
of a culture industry that generates and promotes desire in its subjects
through the production of spectacles. We will examine several SI documents &
then attempt to create poems which produce and/or are produced by situations.
We begin with the following statement from Potlatch #5: Lettrist International:
20 July 1954:

Poetry has exhausted the last of its formal prestiges. Beyond simple
aesthetics, poetry consists entirely of human potential. It is written on the
faces of adventures and in the form of cities. Nothing is more urgent than the
creation of new faces and construction through upheaval. The new beauty will be
SITUATIONAL, that is to say fugitive and lived. The latest artistic variations
interest us only for the potential influence that might be found within them.
To us, poetry means the elaboration of absolutely new conducts, and the means
of making them passionate.

What poetry can we imagine in relation to these speculative imperatives?

Join us & help to create the next objectivism! The Next Objectivists is always
free & open to all. Leave your expertise at the door! Join us today!

SATURDAY, JUNE 12–Propeller Grant Informational Meeting
1pm – 4pm

Propeller Fund Application Workshops introduce the Propeller Fund and offer
tips, hints and advice on how to prepare an application.

Propeller Fund is founded to support visual arts projects that are:
independent, informal, and self-organized. The goal is to stimulate further
independent growth throughout Chicago; to encourage more varied models of
visual arts presentation;to increase public recognition of these ways of
working; to spread self-organized activities into more diverse areas; to
promote the public’s interaction with such activities; and to spark ambitions
beyond current formats.

Propeller Fund will provide a total of $50,000 in grants, at the following
levels: Five grants at $6,000 Ten grants at $2,000 The two-tiered funding
structure awarded to a total 15 projects is devised to provide substantial
support for major costs—printing, rental, honoraria, material, shipping,
research time, etc. —with the aim to ensure that each project has the
resources to live up to its ambitions.

Propeller Fund is administered jointly by Gallery 400, UIC and threewalls.
Initial support for the program is provided by the Andy Warhol Foundation for
the Arts as part of its initiative to promote informal and independently
organized visual arts activities across the United States. Previous regranting
programs initiated by the foundation are located in San Francisco, CA
(Alternative Exposure), and Houston, TX (The Idea Fund).

***Application Deadline: August 1, 2010 Grant awardees announced: October 2010

technology still practiced all over the world by running yarn through cards or
tablets with holes punched in them, to create a work area to weave with. Some
materials will be provided, but if you have yarn and/or dead decks of cards we
can punch holes in to weave through, please bring them! For more information

THURSDAY, JUNE 3—Writing at the Movies
7:00pm – 9:30pm

“Writing at the Movies” A new writing workshop led by the poet Gene Tanta.
Participants in this workshop will use as our point of departure Andre
Breton’s surrealist montage technique of dropping in and out of various
cinemas looking to cutup visual elements and dialogues. However, instead of the
velvety cinemas of Paris, we will use DVDs and Google Videos (no limits on
theme or form). For the first half, we will screen a few minutes of the films
we bring in and/or of internet audio-visual artifacts while describing what we
see and hear. For the second half, we will perform and discuss what we produced
(again, no limits on theme or form). We will write in response to these moving
images and sounds, striving for a precise or even a phenomenological
(suspending our assumptions) description of what we see and hear. Free & open
to the general public! Everyone is welcome to attend!

JUNE 6–Creative Reuse Workshop: Making Rope From Plastic Bags
10:00am-1:00pm

Got a bunch of plastic shopping bags shoved in a kitchen drawer? under the
sink? in the pantry? Bring the whole mess of them to Mess Hall this Sunday &
turn it into ROPE–rope made out of plastic shopping bags! This is the FIRST
in a 2-month series of Sunday morning workshops at Mess Hall scheduled to
coincide with the Glenwood Ave. Sunday morning farmer’s market. Go green. Way
green!

WEDNESDAY, MAY 26, 7-9p: AREA/CPW reading group meeting
**more info soon**

THURSDAY, MAY 27, 7 – 8:30p: Veteran’s Art Project — Veteran and Artist Artistic Partnership

THIS 90-MINUTE WORKSHOP is designed to assist artists from all modalities (visual, musical, performance, etc) and veterans in using their gifts more effectively in artistic partnerships. The interest of members of the artistic community to work with veterans is growing, yet many artists have little exposure to working with veterans experiencing post-traumatic stress reactions and post-deployment reintegration. This workshop allows artists to learn about unique emotional and psychological challenges involved in expressive work with veterans. The workshop is also geared to allow veteran participants to share wisdom from their own prior experiences, and working in previous artistic partnerships. A primary focus will be on exploring participants’ interests and motivations in building partnerships, such as for performance, self-exploration, and connecting to community. Topics of safety, authorship, and flexibility are also addressed. The facilitator, David Faigin, PhD, is a member of the Vet Art Project, a community-clinical psychologist with experience counseling veterans, and also has experience in theater, music, and dance. ALL are welcome!

8:30 – 10:00p: Kundalini Yoga

KUNDALINI YOGA No experience necessary. Please note that movements can be adapted to meet physical requirements. In this workshop we will explore simple practices of meditation, breathing and chanting in combination with classic yoga stretches. What is Kundalini?? Kundalini is an untapped creative energy (sometimes represented by a snake or serpant) that lies coiled at the base of the spine. The practice of Kundalini is one method that can be used to stimulate this creative energy, encourage mental clarity, increase our vitality while reducing tension, ultimatly allowing us to realize what is truly important.

FRIDAY, MAY 28, 7– 10p: A CONVERSATION WITH PHILOSOPHER SIMON CRITCHLEY!

Simon Critchley is one of the most creative and most probing philosophers in the world today. His books include Very Little … Almost Nothing: Death, Philosophy and Literature (1997), Continental Philosophy: A Very Short Introduction (2001), On Humour (2002), Things Merely Are: Philosophy in the Poetry of Wallace Stevens (2005), Infinitely Demanding: Ethics of Commitment, Politics of Resistance (2007), Laughing in a Foreign Language (2008) and The Book of Dead Philosophers (2009). Danny Postel will interview Critchley about his work, with a particular focus on his views regarding religion, Barack Obama, anarchism, and the future of radical politics.

of many original works, translator of revolutionary poets such as Roque Dalton,

THURSDAY, MAY 6–WRITING WORKSHOP: Writing at the Movies
